Emmett C. Burns Jr., a former Maryland delegate and pastor at Rising Sun First Baptist Church, dies at 81, family says – Baltimore Sun

Former Del. Emmett C. Burns Jr., the first African American elected to statewide workplace representing Baltimore County, and the founding pastor at Rising Sun First Baptist Church, which he began together with his spouse of their Lochearn residence, died Thursday.

The Rev. Burns was 81.

“He was very instrumental and strong leader in the community. He was a man of morals, values, ethics and integrity. We are going to sorely miss him,” stated Del. Benjamin T. Brooks Sr., who took over the Rev. Burns’ seat within the tenth District in Baltimore County in 2015.

The Rev. Burns served in Annapolis from 1995 till 2015, representing communities in Lochearn, Milford Mill and Randallstown. In 2005, he helped move a invoice that renamed Baltimore-Washington International Airport for Thurgood Marshall, after the primary Black U.S. Supreme Court justice.

“He was very proud that he changed the name of the airport,” stated Engel Burns, the present pastor and the Rev. Burns’ son.

The Rev. Burns was born in 1940 in Jackson, Mississippi. He earned his undergraduate diploma from Jackson State University, grasp’s levels from Virginia Union University and the Presbyterian School of Christian Education, and a doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh. He went on to serve within the U.S. Air Force from 1975 to 1978.

The Rev. Burns’ son remembered his father taking a vote on the household desk one morning.

“He asked us if he should run,” his son recalled. He received his first election on the breakfast desk, his son stated.

The Rev. Burns’ early work advocating on civil rights points and his religion helped form his political profession. At occasions, his religion would trigger friction in his political life, his son stated.

The Rev. Burns has been a distinguished opponent of same-sex marriage, and wrote Ravens proprietor Steve Bisciotti asking him to quiet linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, an outspoken supporter of same-sex marriage.

Same-sex marriage handed the legislature in 2012.

“He was true to his faith,” his son stated.

Engel Burns stated his father’s largest accomplishment was serving the church.

“As much as he loved serving people in the civic arena, his real passion was the church,” he stated.

The Rev. Burns was additionally a caring father and husband, his son stated.

“He loved his family, he loved his children, and he cherished my mom,” he stated.

In addition to his spouse and son, the Rev. Burns is survived by two different sons and 5 grandchildren.
